Ballet Pointe Shoes - Arches and Boxes

Hi, I just started pointe a couple months ago, and I don't have nearly as good arches as some of the other girls in my class. So while we are working, things are harder for me to do on pointe then they are for the others. Do you have any tips or tricks to help me improve my arches faster and without having to buy something?

Secondly, I am not on my boxes completely which holds me back a bit, once I even fell while doing a pique turn! (I'm fine) But do you have any exercises I could do to help this?

Thanks a bunch!-Nicole

Ballet Pointe Shoes - Arches and Boxes

Hello Nicole,

Thank you for contacting me, it is great to hear from you.

Firstly, dancing with ballet pointe shoes takes time to get used to so do not worry that you feel slightly unsteady. You will gradually build strength and feel more stable in your ballet pointe shoes.

To improve your arches, you can do some great exercises with a latex resistance band. By just simply pointing and stretching your feet against the band, it can build strength and help you for pointe work. Visit my Physical Therapy Equipment page for more information.

Also, try doing some plain rises in first at the barre with your pointe shoes on. This is a very simple exercise that can build strength in your feet and ankles for pointe work. With the support of the barre, you can really concentrate on getting on your boxes completely.

Keep working hard and listen to all your corrections. Keep in touch and let me know how you get on!

All the best,

Odette
