Career Development Plan - Ballet Companies and Tattoos
Odette,
Can I get selected to be in a Ballet Company if I have tattoos? I have been dancing since I was young. I joined the Marine Corps when I was 18 to later go to college. I am now 21, I plan on going back to ballet/contemporary dance when I get out (May of 2012)and going to major in dance.. I was wondering if companies allow tattoos? I have three of them that are noticable in a leotard, however they aren't disrespectful or anything of that nature. Are there more liberal companies that would allow tattoos?

Hello Candice,
Thank you for contacting me it is a pleasure to hear from you.
I personally think having tattoos will not jeopardize your place in a ballet company. Ballet companies will be more concerned about your ability as a dancer and a performer. Tattoos can be covered with make up or skin coloured plasters, so I do not feel it is a major thing for you to worry about.
I know of a first soloist dancer in one of the world's leading ballet companies who has a tattoo on her ankle and it has not been a problem for her. When the dancer has to, she puts a skin-coloured plaster to cover the tattoo.
So it highly depends on how visible your tattoos are and whether you can easily cover them up.
I would love to hear more about your career development plan, please tell me more about your story. I wish you all the best of luck.
Best Wishes,
Odette
