Career Development Plan - Where do I start?

I'm a 20 year-old student at a university in Evansville. I used to dance, for about 10 years to be honest. I was forced to quit though because of financial difficulties and finding a college for me. I thought that I would be able to push dance aside for the betterment of my family, but after 3 years I can't help feeling like I can't live without it. I'm enrolling at a dance class offered at our university, but it's nothing special. I'm not even sure what I would do with dance in my future (if there is a future at this point)....I'm just wondering, what should I do, where should I start if I want to pursue this again?

Hello Mellinda,

Thank you for your queries.

I completely make sense of your feelings that you can't live without dance. Dancing is such a beautiful way of moving and is feels so gratifying for both the mind and the body, that you can feel lost without it - it's very addictive!

Dance with your future - there are many possibilities!

In terms of becoming a professional ballet dancer, it would prove quite difficult to branch into this industry as ballet dancers train at vocational dance schools from their early years to pursue this career.

However, the jazz, modern and contemporary field seem to be more lenient so you could focus on these styles if you want to pursue a career. Or musical theatre is always another alternative.

You have a solid 10 year dance training behind you, this will never leave you, so I don't want to doubt your ability. I suggest you go out there, find some decent dance classes and take it from there. You could find the most convenient local dance school around your area and begin taking classes regularly in the evenings.

It is never to late to start dancing again as a hobby, for the pure love and fun of it. Dancing doesn't have to be done seriously as a career to be benefitted.

The truth is, you never know what could happen until you start taking action and start making things happen.

I absolutely believe you shouldn't deprive yourself of this beautiful gift you have to dance. It sounds as if you are aching to dance and I want you to make this desire happen!

I'm always here to follow your findings, so keep in touch!

All the best,

Odette
